On the eve of its fortieth anniversary and on the occasion of its thirty-sixth annual sessionin the midst of the most serious political, security, health, economic and financialcrisis, questions are increasingly being asked about the legitimacy of governancethe legitimacy of governance and the appropriateness of many policies. Climate changeclimate change is ravaging entire regions, sending populations into great dangerscientific and technical progress has never been so insolent, while social inequalities andwhile social inequality and poverty continue to dominate, and famine is spreadingamong the most vulnerable populations. The Crans-Montana Forum is organizing a majormajor event, a veritable “States General of the World”, to enable all publicpublic, private and civil society leaders to assess the state of the planet, and attempt toto open up new avenues towards a better world.
